Apr. 21, 2009: Schistosoma diagnosis is difficult, requiring detection of parasite eggs in stool, urine, or gut/bladder biopsies. Cell-free parasite DNA (CFPD) detected in the blood by PCR could assist in diagnosing schistosomiasi s in all phases of clinical disease and therapy monitoring. Patients after treatment had significantly lower parasite DNA concentrations and turned negative 1?2 years after treatment.

Results show children attending schools close to open water sources are at higher risk while self-reported hematuria may still be the most useful identifier of the disease.

Jan. 8, 2009: A comprehensive control strategy for S. japonicum infections in two intervention villages and compares with two control villages in China was evaluated. Results from the study showed the intervention measures were significantly effective in reducing the rates of transmission of S. japonicum infection among cattle and humans.
