- One in 300 NHS patients killed by blunders, Richard Branson warns in new health crusade. Read beyond the headline and do some mental arithmetic and you'll find out this in not entirely true.: "One in 300 NHS patients is killed because of avoidable blunders by staff or hospital-acqui red infections, Sir Richard Branson warned yesterday. " If the entire population constitutes the NHS pool of potential lambs to the slaughter - that is 200,000 pa in the UK? But the later wording says, "If you go into hospital you have a one in 300 chance of being killed --not from the illness you went in with, but because of mistakes and other unnecessary problems such as hospital-acqui red infections.&qu ot; People going to hospital and NHS patients = very different numbers. Until finally we get, "Around 2000 NHS patients die each year after errors in treatment - half of which could have been avoided, according to the National Patient Safety Agency. An estimated 5,000 die from superbug infections. " Really - not the same thing at all.
